Davis’ Little Rock Neighborhood Guide: Downtown River Market

Dustin and I have lived in Little Rock about 7 years now.  This blog and season of life have spurred some interesting ideas, one of them being a neighborhood guide of Little Rock.  Our first stop was the Downtown River Market area.  We took a Saturday and wandered around the area.  Walkability in this area is excellent, so Dustin and I parked and walked around for hours.

Food:

If you know us, you know we love brunch.  While Little Rock does not have a whole lot of restaurants that do specifically brunch, there are some places that are starting to realize how awesome brunch is, and adding it.  We went to  a little place called @ The Corner.  We highly recommend it.  The coffee was good, and the bathroom has some interesting art! www.thecornerlr.com

Other places in the area:

Flying Saucer: www.beerknurd.com/locations/little-rock-flying-saucer

Flying Fish: www.flyingfishinthe.net

Damgoode Pies: www.damgoodepies.com/river-market

Dizzy’s Gypsy Bistro: dizzysgypsybistro.net

Kilwins: www.kilwins.com

Andina Cafe: andina-cafe.com

They have some interesting coffee flavors like Banana's Foster. I got the Tanzania Peaberry.

Shopping:

There are some really interesting stores in the downtown area.  There are a few interesting boutiques that have anything from clothing, housewares, books, and Razorback pride items.

Other Places To Check Out:

  • River Market Farmer’s Market: This place was full of interesting vendors from: flowers, fruits/ veggies, soaps, furniture, fried pies, and clothing.  There is an indoor area and an outdoor open air part of the market.  Inside were some vendors and a cafeteria like setting with almost every kind of food you can imagine.

Outside under the open air market was one of our new favorite vendors: Aretha’s Beverages.  They are a must check out. (www.facebook.com/arethasbeverages) I LOVE the Strawberry Basil Lemonade, but the Sweet Mint Tea and Spice Jar Punch are awesome too!  The combinations of flavors were so amazing, and different, that they were almost sold out of everything by the time we arrived.  We were lucky to be able to sample all of them and we came home with some as well!

  • Movies in the Park:  In the summer months there are movies in the park held at First Security Amphitheater every Wednesday June through July.  It is free and sometimes food trucks! moviesintheparklr.net
  • Ron Robinson Theater:  There are older movies shown addition to having shows, artists, and musicians perform here.  This year they are showing 6 James Bond movies. It really is not that expensive if you are looking for a cheap date night idea!  Check out the calendar for details: www.cals.org/ronrobinson
  • Clinton Library:  Dustin and I did not go in, but it is only $10 per person to tour.  There are exhibits that come through and the library is an attraction a lot of our friends have been to.  We were content with walking the grounds.  I really only wanted to see the Anne Frank Tree.  I love history and was very eager to see the sapling that was from the original tree in Amsterdam that Anne Frank saw/ wrote about while in hiding.  Little Rock was one of 11 places in the United States granted a sapling to plant from the original tree before it died.  www.clintonlibrary.gov

  • Butler Center Galleries:  A huge converted coffee factory and some surrounding buildings which house all kinds of amazing art.  The gentleman at the front showed us the vault that now houses an art installation.  It winds around and keeps your eye for a long time.
  • Just park and walk, since you never know what you could see:

After unpacking all of our farmers market goodies we crashed.  Fun afternoon!  Let us know some of your favorite River Market places to visit!
