I was watching the news the other day and apparently this year is going on record to be one of the wettest years in Washington D.C. Which is very depressing for us as that limits us going out and exploring. Our small studio apartment in NOMA is amazing until you are stuck in it for a few weekends straight. Though it was cold we went out to see what kind of Christmas in DC fun we could discover.
First Stop: Union Station
- Check out the main entrance tree, and village with the train.
- Get Blue Bottle Coffee. (We like the Holiday Blend pour over.)
- Do some holiday shopping, especially if you need some DC souvenirs.
- Walk the building to check out the exterior decor. (Then go back at night to check out the lights!)
Second Stop: Walk the National Mall
- Walk with your coffee from Union Station to the Capitol to see the National Tree.
- Walk to the Sculpture Garden to go ice skating in the park under the shadow of the National Archives.
Third Stop: Walk to the White House Christmas Tree & Get Lunch
- Walk the National Mall to the White House Eclipse to see the Christmas Tree (Which was disappointing. And hard to get close to. We actually ended up seeing it from a distance and moving on. If you can only see one tree go to the Capitol tree.)
- Walk towards the Metro Centre to find some lunch, because you will be cold and you will be hungry from all your walking. We went to Pi Pizza which hit the spot.
Fourth Stop: Walk the Holiday Market near the National Portrait Gallery.
- There was much to take in, but DO NOT GO ON A WEEKEND day. The amount of people in a small walkway made us feel like we were cattle being corralled.
- There were quite a few vendors, including music, food, gifts, and coffee. We stoped by the doughnut vendor, Vigilante Coffee, and got some Christmas gift ideas.
Fifth Stop: Grab Kona and Go to the Wundergarten for Peppermint Hot Chocolate.
- For the record we went too late so all of the seating was taken. This place is so fun though, so go early to grab your seat around a heater on a sofa.
- There are art installations ( which yes I ent into a kissing snow globe to take a picture alone, as this was a place dogs are not allows in the wundergarten.)
- There was wood fired pizza, a market of vendors to buy some Christmas gifts and even a place to buy your Christmas tree!
Life after December is a big question mark for us right now, with a lot of choices to make and things to do. This past weekend was a great distraction of holiday fun. As this weekend is rain filled, I am praying that next weekend we can get back out there and explore some more. So fingers crossed; more holiday fun to be had and shared soon!
Update: Check out our post about some family holiday fun we had in 2019.
Love this. Just wish I would have had these photos before I printed the calendar.
