We have decided that there is ALWAYS something happening on the National Mall in DC. From a rally, to a parade, to a festival, we can pretty much count on running into something to see. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival was no exception, as we were just walking to the metro station and ran into this event. Armenian and Catalan cultures were on full display through: song, dance, textiles, food and more. This was something I could get behind even though it was about 1000 degrees. (Welcome summer…)
We ended up finding out (by accident as we didn’t read the sign… facepalm) that it was a 2 weekend long thing and we were able to go twice. This meant I could also explore more of the places within the festival we missed the previous weekend.
In pure Smithsonian style, the festival had interactive opportunities to learn about cultural dishes, dances, and art. You can try foods from other cultures, and see how they are made. Artisans are there for you to not only shop but to also see how things are made. The detail and craftsmanship is very visible from this up close interaction. You can see the passion for the art that the craftsmen and women have for their trade.
I have always loved detailed rugs, but to see the intense/ intricate loom and weaving process has taken my love to a whole new level. I also found the dream rug.
Making the festival shop-able, the Market Place was amazing. I wanted a rug, a purse, a skirt, and gifts for so many people. However, since all of the items are handmade they were expensive. The skirt I loved (hand embroidered, with amazing fabrics) was $450+ !!!!! Needless to say, I did not leave with anything, and I was bummed.
The Folklife Festival DC is something that I feel is fun for the whole family and a must see if you are in town.
Hope your weekend is going well, and you are enjoying the summer! We would love to hear any questions you have about visiting DC and suggestions for places we should explore on our Saturdays!
