We are back! It has been the fastest and slowest 3 months (seriously AT THE SAME TIME) we have had in a long time. We took a break from posting, as life got crazy. Y’all know Christmas is its own version of crazy, but then Dustin’s task order ended in the middle of the longest government shutdown in history. So we were on a roller coaster of what was next for us. Within a span of 30 days: Dustin’s task order ended, almost moved to Denver, we moved apartments in DC, and Dustin got another job in DC. Needless to say this past season has been one big trust-fall as it was pretty much that order…
With this new job we are staying in DC for a while, as it is a permanent position. We are so thankful, and know that this job is the right step in our longterm goals/ dreams. So here is an overview of our last 2 ish months!
My parents spent Christmas in DC with us. It was so much fun seeing some of the sights with them. They stayed in Alexandria, so we spent a some time seeing that part of the DMV area. (I am not a horrible hostess, my mom is just allergic to dogs. She can only be in my apartment for 20 minute increments. Staying with us is not an option.). My mom went to college in DC so it is cool to see her reminisce as she walked the streets where she used to live. Christmas dinner included oysters, pizza, and amazing dessert at Brabo Tasting Room in Old Town Alexandria. My parents loved it so much we went twice at their request.
While we spent most of January/ February packing then unpacking, there were a few moments we got out. Most of the time it was just to walk Kona, but with so much snow this year we enjoyed the National Mall/ Capital covered in snow a couple times.
Saying goodbye to apartments is actually really hard for me. I get super sentimental about the memories made. Saying goodbye to NOMA seems silly since we just moved to Capital Hill, which is only a 15-20 minute walk. We love the new neighborhood feel of the location of the new place. There is a great breakfast place ( Jimmy T’s Place ) we found on a random walk with Kona one day. It is amazing and great prices! If you want to try it make sure you bring cash and though it is a seat yourself place, don’t sit at a dirty table. A word to the wise, moving to a basement apartment is quintessential DC, but it comes with its own quirks. Older buildings, thinner walls, weird builds with wiring to be unable to hang things, etc.
While waiting for a friend one day I stopped in at the National Portrait Gallery to catch a newer exhibit called “Blackout- Silhouettes Then and Now.” It really is a must see when in DC. The historical silhouettes and current versions were amazing, and very interactive.
See our post about the National Portrait Gallery from before.
And we FINALLY went to a Capitals hockey game!!! I have been wanting to do this since we moved here. We went with a group of people Dustin met when working at his job last year, and they were lively to say the least. I didn’t even mind being only 1 row from the top of the stadium.
And finally on a trip to Georgetown for a failed shopping expedition, we found the best French bakery in DC — Boulangerie Christophe. Seriously, amazing coffee, and as close to Paris croissants as you can find. As much as I don’t like going to Georgetown, I will make special trips just for that.
So all in all it has small adventures in between big life things. Since DC is our home for the foreseeable future, we made a DC bucket list of must do’s before we leave. I am glad we have a while here because that list is LONG! Super excited to get started and glad we are back to blogging about life.
